Unfortunately, a lot of the time, friends and family of an addict or alcoholic don’t think family counseling is necessary. They basically just drop the addict or alcoholic off, expecting them to be “fixed” (not in the veterinary sense of the word), and have them back as good as new.

Family counseling is mandatory. If it were that easy, then that would be great. However, it doesn’t work like that.

Ironically, usually the addict or alcoholic is the healthiest person in the family. That’s usually a hard thing to hear as a family member of an addict or alcoholic, but it isn’t a bad thing. After all, you can’t fix a problem if you don’t know that one exists.

The addict/alcoholic is the healthiest one because they are so acutely aware of what is going on within the family and their environment. They can see that there are huge issues within the family system that aren’t being addressed, and in many cases, that those issues are getting worse rather than better.

Drugs and alcohol are nothing more than an escape–whether it be from pain or reality altogether. That the addict or alcoholic felt that they had no where else to turn other than drugs and/or alcohol means that they could no longer reconcile the disparity between what should be and what is.

Please know that no one is to blame for an addict or alcoholic’s behavior. We are all responsible for the choices we make and the consequences that result. However, to expect that an alcoholic or addict will be “fixed” and sent right back into the same system which drove them to drinking and using in the first place is a recipe for disaster.

Especially in teen recovery programs, there is a much greater tendency to approach this problem as such. Many just assume that it is rebellion that has gotten out of control. For some, that may be true, but without the participation of the addict or alcoholic’s family, there is no way to tell. This is why family counseling is crucial to the recovery and healing process of addiction.

Think about it: would you trust a drug addict or alcoholic to tell a counselor the whole truth about what they are doing and what is going on–especially when there may not be any interest in finding recovery? We doubt it because we’ve been there before ourselves. Even if they were willing to reveal everything to the counselors, they may not be aware of or remember key things that may be going on.

Alcoholism and addiction are a family disease. That means that it isn’t one person’s fault, or that one person is responsible for how things are. A family is a team that consists of more than one person, so it is highly unlikely that only one person is responsible for what happens within a family dynamic.

Fortunately, we have some of the greatest family counselors in the world, and they have dealt with seemingly hopeless cases before. It is a beautiful thing watching families who have been torn apart by drug and alcohol addiction and come back together, and we want everyone to have the best chance at success.

449 Recovery offers group therapy programs, on-call counselors, family interventions and specialized programs designed to treat the heart of the problem of drug and alcohol addiction.

I am not sure why or how I remember this short kid’s rhyme but a few things struck me about the choice of verbiage. The correlation between oxy and antifreeze, two extremely common terms with poisonous properties; well based on how they’re used. Ask anyone around you if they have ever heard of antifreeze and they will probably tell you that they have. Ask those same individuals if they have ever heard of Oxycontin or Oxycodone and they will again say that they have. All of these may seem so sweet but underneath it all is disaster waiting to happen. One that can easily be prevented for many individuals.

In 2011 in the United States alone over 200 million prescriptions were written for opioid painkillers. This is a staggering amount given the population of this country. And while these little devils are great for relieving pain, many times, they also come with a price. Opiate and Opioid painkillers have highly addictive properties and many of the individuals that are prescribed these pharmaceuticals become dependent, and a negative toll begins to take shape.

So how do we decrease the amount of opiate dependent individuals in our cities and throughout the country? The argument that we should get rid of this medication is one that neither makes sense at the moment nor seems very possible. What can be done to combat this growing epidemic? Two things would have a much needed impact if properly utilized; education and non-pharmaceutical pain management.

Education is vital if patient are going to truly make well informed decisions when it comes to their health and treatment. Each patient needs to be made well aware of how addictive Opiates and Opioids can be and what this would mean if they themselves became dependent on the medication. In this way patients might make informed decisions about medication amount and the duration in which they desire to utilize the medication.

Putting an increased emphasis on research and the practice of non-narcotic pain management could also help to decrease the prevalence of opiate and opioid dependency within this country. In fact the United States consumes over 90% of the world’s opiates. How does this make sense when we are but a fraction of the overall population? I doubt that Americans are just more prone to pain and highly doubt that we are so active as a country that injury is becoming epidemic.

Much has been said about forgiveness throughout the ages. Despite all the spiritual and self-help advice we receive, however, most people still find it very difficult to forgive.

While we often say the words “I forgive you” or “let’s forget and move on,” still deep within our hearts we are not really letting go of most of the anger and blame we feel against someone who may have seriously wronged us. This can result in ongoing personal suffering that, for some, continues to last throughout their lifetime.

The reason why most spiritual and self-help advice about forgiveness doesn’t help is because it doesn’t delve deeply enough into the actual causes of our anger and blame in the first place. When you correctly understand the true causes of anger in human beings, you begin to deeply appreciate that the most important causes of anger and resentment lie mainly within us, and not with the behavior of others or whatever may have happened in the past.

These internal causes are anger-producing thought patterns and action patterns that become triggered within in our bodies. Often, these internal thought patterns and action or behavior patterns produce “false internal realities” within us that we automatically assume to be true, but that have little correspondence to the truth about what really happened. But we end up getting angry and holding on to our anger anyway, because our bodies automatically assume that all of these “internal realities” are indeed true.

For example, automatic anger-producing thoughts such as “someone did something they shouldn’t have done” or “I was hurt or harmed by what happened” or “the other person was unilaterally to blame for what occurred” are frequently incorrect. As a result of these mistaken “internal realities,” we conclude that a crime has been committed and that someone should apologize, offer to make amends, and/or be punished. When none of these things occur, or sometimes even when they do, we may find it very difficult to forgive.

There is no way you can “let go” of your anger or truly forgive the past as long as “false internal realities” remain unchallenged within you. You cannot pretend “all is forgiven” when you are certain that: a) you were seriously harmed; b) the other person (or yourself) was unilaterally to blame; and c) this person should have done something different.

THE SECRET TO TRUE FORGIVENESS IS TO CHALLENGE YOUR INTERNAL ASSUMPTIONS THAT LEAD YOU TO BELIEVE AN UFORGIVABLE CRIME WAS ACTUALLY COMMITTED IN THE FIRST PLACE.

The best way to do this is to recognize where your automatic assumptions, which are causing your anger and resentment, are false or misleading. Once you challenge and disprove these “false internal realities,” your anger and resentment will quickly disappear, without you having to do anything to try to force this to happen.

Even when a true crime, such as a theft or murder was committed, it is still possible–although not easy–to forgive the offending party. This can sometimes be done by challenging your automatic assumption that the person should have “known better” or should have behaved in a different manner.

So you’re looking for effective alcohol treatment. Well I can tell you, no matter what your demographic location, addiction strikes all the same. Understanding this attacker is really the first step in overcoming and effectively treating alcohol dependence or alcohol problems, and this attacker is one that is cunning, baffling, and powerful as some wise individuals often say. A good fighter is going to extensively study and understands their opponent; and so too must you understand what you are up against to maximize your potential for success. Many individuals do improve their quality of living but many also run through the gauntlet of treatment center to do so.

While it can be argued why individuals complete and/or attend multiple programs efficiency wins in all ways. Either it takes a series of trials to find the one program that works, or treatment is sometimes a slow process and many treatments occur within that time. Regardless, finding effective treatment will limit either of these processes. So what is effective treatment?

The program you are looking for should be evidenced based. There are many programs that might have you stare at goats with the hope of keeping you sober. While this might work for some, research has yet to validate this technique. Addiction is a complex disease; it fits the conceptual model for a disease, and so must be treated as such. Note that while this is a complex disease it is not an excuse; it is an individual’s choice to receive treatment for something such as diabetes and not doing so is simply irresponsible. Addiction is a disease of the brain. There are physiological adaptations to chemical abuse in various systems in the body but the brain is the focus of treatment while also treatment of symptoms to promote a return to homeostasis. In fact, looking at a line graph of medical versus therapeutic treatment you will see an emphasis on physiological treatment initially with a gradual decline and an increasing emphasis on psychological treatment with a growth of effectiveness due to pre-frontal cortex functioning.

This program should be one that is very malleable to the individual. No single treatment works for everyone and therefore a program should treat every client individually and use all known therapies which are proven effective. The program should not only adapt its treatment to the client initially but also throughout the duration of treatment. If a client is not having success with current treatment then only the same can be expected throughout the duration. The treatment needs to have a well-developed continuum of care with the ability to rapidly adapt and maneuver; treating the client where they are at in their recovery. For example, while detoxification is an initial stage relapse sometimes occurs and requires a rapid shift in this continuum.

Research has shown the effectiveness of treatment in directly proportionate to the amount of time in said treatment. Therefore a quality program will have tools in place to promote this duration of care. Many programs will offer aftercare programs and even lifetime counseling for the client and their families. This is a vital tool that should be sought and utilized by individuals in recovery. This is often differentiated from 12-step programs which, in this author’s opinion, should be utilized in conjunction if appropriate for the individual.

Medically assisted treatment has been shown to be very effective especially when combined with counseling and psychiatric care. A quality program recognizes this need and understands that while medications are an effective tool they are just that; a tool. Medications can make withdrawal a comfortable process and help the client transition into non-medicated state. Other medications can help limit cravings, block euphoria, and even prevent certain illicit drugs from having any effect on the client at all. A combination can be used to aid clients during the initial stages of treatment, as well as, promote brain healing and a return to homeostasis.

Overall a quality program is going to be one that maintains a comprehensive treatment atmosphere and is structured in such a way that the needs of the client are met at the beginning of treatment and throughout its duration by maintaining a rapidly dynamic model. When searching for treatments ask questions. A good program should be able to answer any of these concerns and explain to you exactly how their program addresses each one.

The awareness of self esteem and self esteem self help programs is increasing. These self help programs have proven to improve self esteem and there a range that are created for different lifestyles. However, before getting these programs you must understand your own self confidence level.

Self esteem is your strength in facing problems or situations and learning how to handle difficult situations can give you strength to face your daily challenges. If you don’t know how to measure your self esteem, try to write down everything you do well. Look at your strengths everyday to remind yourself that you have all these traits and no one can take these from you. If you like to improve your strengths then proceed to getting one of the self esteem self help programs.

What Self Esteem Self Help Program is Right for You?

Here are some questions you can ask yourself to assess what course is most appropriate for you:

• Do you prefer to do practical self-esteem exercises?

• Do you like writing exercises?

• Do you want to build self esteem while you are doing your daily routine?

Practical Self Esteem Self Help Course

This course will give you exercises to build your self esteem like acting, singing, dancing, public speaking and etc. in front of other people. This way, you will be confident in front of other people in whatever situations you are in.

Building Self Esteem through Writing

There are toolkits for self esteem improvement that require writing. The toolkit consists of self help book, questionnaires and answer sheets which you need to wholeheartedly answer the questions right after you finish each chapter of the book.

Self Esteem Self Help Exercise while Doing Your Daily Routine

This self help program requires you to download subliminal software. The subliminal tool is composed of subliminal messages which you need to listen to everyday. These subliminal messages contain positive affirmations. The subliminals are in a form of hypnosis but it will not put you in a trance so you could listen to it anytime and everywhere.

When you repetitively listen to subliminal messages, they will be programmed to your subconscious mind to motivate you to level up your self worth. Your conscious mind may not hear any positive affirmations because the messages target your subconscious mind. The positive affirmations are delivered beneath the peaceful and calming sound of ocean waves. The great part of this is that when you listen to the messages you can still do your daily routine, undisturbed. This is the most popular self esteem self help program today.

A competent therapist should have the proper academic background, extensive experience and commitment to patients. These days, it is not easy to find service providers who can provide you with 100 percent results. Hence, you have to be careful in your search. The most practical way in getting a highly capable therapist is through personal referrals. You have to consider not only aptitude but previous practice as well. Try to learn what other patients say about this counselor. These testimonials can help make your job in finding the qualified candidate easier.

You may opt for a professional referral agency or portal. There are professional organizations that maintain a directory of accredited and reputable therapists. It is one way of avoiding individuals who have an undesirable record or are not fit to perform this kind of work. Your family doctor can also be a reliable source. Prominent educational institutions are also good resources. Do not settle for only one applicant. There are prestigious counseling facilities that you can approach and solicit referrals. It is advisable to interview three prospects so you can have options to evaluate. Inquire about licenses and training since these are essential prerequisites. Know the government regulations about licensing so you are assure of getting the rightful provider.

Be careful to protect yourself. Just because someone says they are a therapist does not mean that they have had any training. People can call themselves a therapist, a psychotherapist, an analyst, a counselor, a marriage counselor, a hypnotherapist, or a sex therapist and not have had any formal training. Although very uncommon, it is nevertheless possible to practice as a psychiatrist in the United States without having obtained any specialized training more than a medical license. A psychologist should have the necessary license while a psychiatrist should have acquired a certification from the proper body.

It is important to develop rapport with your therapist. Choose someone with the same sex if you are quite choosy about gender. Inquire about professional fees so you can fix a budget for this service. Ask all the questions you like regarding treatment, schedules and the personal credentials of the therapist. When everything has been addressed, it is time to present your case and history. Be very candid with your counselor. Refrain from withholding any information prior to the preliminary session. Make it a point to attend all sessions promptly because these will ensure that you are successful with your therapy.

Who wouldn’t want to get trapped in paradise? Provided, obviously, that you don’t surely have to get stranded for too long. After all, one needs work and civilisation (i.e. getting your non-fat, latte fix for the day). But while you’re basking under the sunny skies, diving in the deep blue beach, and marvelling at Mother Nature, you’ll wish to have the perfect swimsuit as well as the ideal accessories. Whether you’re headed for a fascinating retreat abroad or an accessible, world-class resort in your region, Seafolly sale give these must-have items to pack for your trip to paradise.

The drop dead gorgeous swimwear, it doesn’t matter if the resort you’re visiting causes you to feel like you’re in a practically remote area. You’ll still want to appear to be the sexy beast that you are. Seafolly’s suggestion for this time includes the Sophia Tangerine, the Lola Rose, and Safari. Every style appeals to a particular girl as well as a specific body. The two-piece Sophia gives you that ’50s old style look with its big checked print and also demure ruffling on the top and bottom. The Lola Rose, which is a one-piece with flowery print and also seductive detailing, is perfect for full figured females. Meanwhile, the Safari in sepia, which includes a belt, works nicely for gorgeous styles.

The impeccably fashionable haute hat, it’s the perfect way to cap your preferred swimsuit. Not only will a hat pull your swimwear look together, it will also protect you from the scorching mid-day sun. Seafolly’s hat selection displays a number of styles that can match your swimwear. From the white Lizzy Hat worn with a bold and shimmery two-piece with a hipster bottom to the Tow the Line Hat put on with an amazing extravagant cherry printed maillot, you’ll find headwear that will fit your swimwear.

The strappy and sexy sandals, flip-flops are great. But any fashionable lady recognises that no other resort footwear will do but strappy sandals. You can go with simple flats for days when you’re chilling out by the seaside, reading a magazine or drinking margaritas. And then for a night time of dining and salsa grooving, you could go with sandals with detailing for a dose of sparkle.

Being “stranded” in a tropical paradise only gets much better when you know you’ve packed all the crucial gear. From your Seafolly printed maillot to the famous brand’s selection of hats, your time in paradise will be well spent in high design.

Seafolly kids offers amazing and innovative swimwear can make your style increase. With their extensive accessories, you can make your day fabulous.

Time management tips can help you race around countless roadblocks that pop up. One of the trickiest obstacles you will encounter is Time Gremlins. They’re very hard to see, so you may collide with them at full speed! They’re particularly difficult to sidestep when you question whether they even exist.

In my experience, Time Gremlins are real. What is more, they hide out inside you at all times. You might envision them as voices of your time issues. You know you’ve encountered one when inner messages tangle your plans, sabotage your priorities, and ruin your pleasure in your time choices. Because they’re not visible to you, their voices can often run riot, just below your consciousness. Unless, of course, you intercept them.

To neutralize each one, plan to take many small steps over time. As you become skilled in battling Time Gremlins, you’ll be very pleased with the results! So let’s begin:

Getting to Know Your Time Gremlins:

Your Time Gremlins occupy your blind spots. Any unexamined idea about time that you’ve believed since childhood provides a fertile breeding ground. So does wishful thinking. And their effect is universal. They steal your power from you! Worst of all, they feel like they’re outside your control (although or course they are not.)

Here’s a simple quiz to recognize these enemies of your time:

Quiz: How Do Gremlins Steal Your Time?

Pick the question that resonates most, and fill in the blank:

Question #1: What’s blocking your path?

Answer: ________ keeps me from doing what I need to do.

Question #2: What never gets done?

Answer: I never get around to _________________________.

Question #3: What time traits do you judge in yourself?

Answer: I judge myself as being ______________________.

Question #4: What excuses do you fall back on when plans fall apart?

Answer: I would get everything taken care of, if only _______________.

Write down the statement you completed that affects you the most strongly. Then ask yourself the following question:

What can you do to stand in your power and change this statement?

Relax, close your eyes, and envision yourself living a dynamic new life script. Feel it down to your toes. Describe it in one or two sentences. Identify one gain!

Remember, with every loss there is a gain. And with every gain there is a loss. Weigh the price for more power over your time. Accepting this is the key to your freedom!

You are standing at an important crossroads.

Are you willing to weather the losses that come with important gains? By consciously committing to go the distance, you gain enormous strength to keep setbacks in perspective with what you will be giving yourself.

Now, how will you set limits on your Time Gremlins today?

Sign up for our free gift, “The New Finding Time Boundary Template: 9 Simple, Sequential Steps to Find More Time and Recharge Your Energy!”

I love to drum. I love to drum with people, I love to drum alone, in ceremony or not in ceremony. I build drums for myself and I also help others build their own. It is enormously rewarding, especially when these same people keep showing up in the drum circles I’m privileged to conduct, which are ceremonial healing circles. There, I play a small floor drum, a 16 inch by 16 inch cottonwood section, double head, which is suspended between two deer antlers. And it talks. I use two mallets to play that one. I use a seven sided hand drum with spider web lacing for healing and in sweatlodge. Or sometimes I’ll use a round hand drum, just depends on what the Spirits want. There is another interesting use of the drum and that is to journey.

When I say we journey with a drum, I don’t mean we take a literal, physical trip somewhere in the body. But we can, and often do “go” somewhere, and it is to a place beyond the imagination. A place where, when we finally and really let go and allow ourselves the possibility, we enter a world just as real as the material world. We call it the Spirit World. But I must apologize for my inarticulate use of the English language to accurately and adequately describe this phenomenon of entering the Spirit World, as place is the only word I know that gets the idea across in mainstream-speak. The problem, of course, is that using a word like place implies separation; we are here, place is there. We are actually working in dimensions, but not the cliches of parallel universe, string theory or that old favorite “that which is outside the space-time continuum,” all of which reinforce the image of separation. This is more inter-dimensional. After all, withdraw the energy of Spirit from the material world and we end up with either a big pile of nondescript and rapidly decaying goo, or it would evaporate altogether as quickly as the alleged Big Bang brought it into existence. The Spirit World not only informs the material world energetically, or physically (as in “physics”), but also intelligently. The material world reflects back to the Spirit World our development as individuals and as a collective so the Spirits can help us all develop qualities of deeper consciousness and expanded compassion. Hence, one cannot exist outside the other.

Indigenous people have for a very long time understood this idea of interdimensionality, of the Spirits informing, even inhabiting (after a fashion) the material, and they do have terms for it. Perhaps the best known is the Lakota Taku Scan Scan (Da-koo Schkah Schkah), which transliterates to “that which is behind all that moves.” Yes, we’re talking very sophisticated physics here, but I promise not to go any deeper. After all, I’m supposed to be writing about drum journey. But I do feel it is important to address the point to counter this idea of separation between the worlds promulgated by corporate religions. My reason is that I observe many people actually fear drum journey. “What if I don’t come back?” This may sound funny, but it’s not to someone who wants to touch into themselves on a deeper emotional and spiritual level, but has this religiously inspired wall known as Separation blocking them. Journeying with the drum has helped many of these people destroy the illusion of separation of the worlds.

Many people who lead a drum journey will instruct participants to get as comfortable as they want such as laying down on a blanket, and most do. They are then taken on a guided journey, which is a technique to help them relax the body. The drum begins a soft, muffled beat with thickly padded mallets that takes them “out there.” The sound of the drum goes with them, it is always there, softly breathing in the background. They know if they start feeling uncomfortable, or if something startles them, to head for the drumbeat. This allows them to relax into their journey, they know where home is. The drum may go on for a half hour, or more. Some 2,700 to 3,000 deeply relaxing beats. It’s not unusual for someone to fall asleep, which is nothing to worry about. It just means the Spirits need them to get out of the way so they can do their work.

The beat picks up, the drum talks louder, and the people start moving, stretching, maybe yawning a bit. The drum stops as soon as the last person comes to. Silence.

Eventually someone will speak, at which time the drummer will ask if anyone has anything they want to talk about. There is always someone who does. And it encourages others to speak of their experience, and after a while, even those who were skeptical or afraid will speak and they will talk of going places and talking with people who spoke to them not just sensibly, but esoterically, yet it all made sense somehow and it was just what they needed to hear. Or see, or even feel.

Sharing their experiences in the room, but not outside the room, they start to accept the reality of what they just experienced. It’s no different than working out at the local gym. The more one does, the more one can do. The better one gets at it, the quicker one can get into it. Confidence in the process grows, allowing one to go further each successive time.

This is a whole great big fantastic world we live in, spinning its way through an equally fantastic and mysterious universe. Taking a journey with a drum may be but one small step toward a deeper appreciation not only of the Earth and the universe we live in, but of that which moves behind all of it, the Taku Scan Scan. But it is a solid start toward that expanded consciousness and compassion the Great Mystery is looking for in us. There is someone in your area who understands drum journey. Find that person. Then show up.

Rick McBride is mixedblood Tsalagi (Cherokee) and helps people journey with the drum. If you’re ever in south Florida, look him up. He’s also running a survey titled Is the Earth Alive? and would love it if you participated.
